The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) is examining a proposal to construct a 500-metre underpass near the Crown Plaza traffic signal in Mayur Vihar Phase 1 to ease congestion on the busy Delhi-UP Road. The proposed infrastructure is intended to provide a smoother route for vehicles travelling from the DND side towards Chilla and Trilokpuri, allowing through traffic to bypass the congested junction.

The Crown Plaza intersection currently handles a combination of through traffic, local vehicles and turning movements, which often converge during peak hours and result in bottlenecks and long queues. Under the proposal, vehicles travelling towards Chilla and Trilokpuri would use the underpass, while local and turning traffic would continue on the surface road. Officials are also examining the possibility of introducing a ground-level rotary to improve traffic movement around the junction.

The proposed underpass would be around 500 metres long, although its precise alignment has not yet been finalised. The PWD is assessing how the structure would connect with the existing road network and determining suitable entry and exit points. Officials are also studying how traffic would be managed on the surface once the underpass becomes operational, should the project eventually receive approval.

The proposal remains at the feasibility-study stage, with several technical and environmental factors still being examined before construction can be considered. One of the key parts of the assessment involves mapping underground infrastructure along the proposed alignment. Water pipelines, electricity cables, gas lines, telecom networks and other utilities would need to be identified, with any conflicting infrastructure potentially requiring protection, relocation or modification.

Trees along the corridor are also expected to be surveyed and mapped as part of the assessment. The exercise will record their species, size, condition and location, with the authorities seeking to retain as many trees as possible while planning the infrastructure. These studies will help determine whether the proposed alignment can be implemented without creating significant conflicts with existing infrastructure and the surrounding environment.

If implemented, the underpass could remove one major traffic signal from the journey of commuters travelling towards Chilla and Trilokpuri. The proposal comes as connectivity in and around Mayur Vihar and the Delhi-Noida corridor continues to develop, with the ongoing Barapullah Phase III corridor project also aimed at improving connectivity between Mayur Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan. However, the Crown Plaza underpass will depend on the outcome of the ongoing feasibility and technical assessments.
