In a major financial lifeline for the cash-strapped Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), state-run oil marketing companies, Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum, will increase diesel discounts by 30 paise per litre starting August 1. The move, announced on Wednesday, is set to save MSRTC approximately ₹11.8 crore annually, with daily savings of ₹3.23 lakh.
The decision follows persistent efforts by Maharashtra Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik, who championed the discount to bolster the corporation’s fragile finances. Operating a fleet of over 15,000 buses and consuming 10.77 lakh litres of diesel daily across 251 depots, MSRTC faces significant operational costs.
Sarnaik emphasized the need to cut expenses and explore new revenue streams beyond ticket sales to strengthen the corporation. MSRTC also plans to expand its fleet by adding 5,000 buses annually, aiming to enhance services while tackling its financial challenges head-on.
