Widespread public fury erupted across Uttarakhand on Sunday, with thousands taking to the streets to demand the immediate arrest of a purported 'VIP' linked to the 2022 murder of 19-year-old receptionist Ankita Bhandari, amid accusations of political protection and investigative lapses.
In Dehradun, a large crowd comprising women, youth, and activists from various political and social groups marched from the Parade Ground toward the Chief Minister’s residence, chanting slogans for justice and accountability. The demonstration, involving parties like Congress and Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, turned confrontational at Hathibarkala where police barricades halted the procession, leading to scuffles as protesters attempted to push forward.
Congress leader Shivani Mishra highlighted the case as evidence of a deeper criminal network shielded by political influence, pointing to recent claims involving the alleged wife of former MLA Suresh Rathore. Protesters carried placards reading “Ankita, we are ashamed, your killers are alive” and urged hill residents to unite in their call for transparency.

The rally concluded with the submission of a memorandum to the Chief Minister, demanding inclusion of the implicated VIP in the probe within a week. Organizers subsequently announced a statewide shutdown on January 11 to escalate pressure, pledging outreach to traders for widespread participation and warning of ongoing actions like candlelight marches.
Prominent participants included Pradesh Mahila Congress President Jyoti Rautela and other leaders, underscoring cross-party support. Similar demonstrations occurred in areas like Sult, led by Congress figures such as Karan Mahara, reflecting statewide discontent over the perceived delays in delivering full justice in this high-profile case that continues to evoke strong emotions.
