A 41-year-old man, identified as Mohammed Nasim from Rathipur village under Jatni police station, was found dead in the toilet of the Bhubaneswar-Tirupati Superfast Express at Bhubaneswar railway station on Saturday morning. The body, discovered during routine cleaning before the train’s scheduled departure, was hanging from the toilet window with a belt, prompting the Government Railway Police (GRP) to launch an investigation.
The train arrived from Tirupati late Friday night and was moved to the washing track, where cleaning staff noticed the locked toilet around 7:00 AM. “After breaking open the door, we found the body suspended by a belt. A PAN card identified him as Mohammed Nasim,” said GRP Inspector-in-Charge Ashok Kumar Gochhayat. The body was sent to Capital Hospital for a post-mortem, and an unnatural death case was registered. “Preliminary investigation points to suicide, but we’re exploring all angles,” Gochhayat added, noting efforts to contact Nasim’s family.
This marks the second such incident at Bhubaneswar station in 15 days, following the discovery of a 30-year-old Uttar Pradesh youth’s body in the Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Duronto Express on August 16. The GRP, alongside the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and a forensic team, is reviewing CCTV footage and passenger lists to trace Nasim’s movements. No suicide note was found, and the absence of visible injuries suggests no foul play, though the post-mortem report is awaited.

The incidents have raised concerns about railway safety, with three bodies found in train toilets at Bhubaneswar this month alone, including an unidentified youth in the Purushottam Express on the same day. X posts, like one from @OdishaNews24, highlighted public alarm, urging better mental health support and onboard monitoring. The GRP has intensified checks, but no motive for Nasim’s suspected suicide has been confirmed, leaving questions about the growing trend of such tragedies in Odisha’s railway network.
