Amid escalating political tensions following the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 results, outgoing chief minister Mamata Banerjee has launched fresh allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that her party’s defeat was the result of “electoral manipulation” rather than a public mandate. Speaking at a press conference in Kalighat, Kolkata, Banerjee said the Trinamool Congress (TMC) did not fight the BJP directly in the election, but instead faced what she described as institutional bias. “We did not fight the BJP, we fought the EC, which worked for the saffron party,” she alleged, accusing the poll body of enabling vote manipulation in the state.
The TMC Chief further claimed that she was physically assaulted during the counting process, stating that she was “kicked, pushed and manhandled” inside the counting centre. She did not provide independent verification of the incident, but reiterated that the electoral process was compromised. The Election Commission had declared the final results on Monday, with the BJP securing 207 of the 294 assembly seats, while the TMC was reduced to 80 seats. The outcome marks a significant political shift in West Bengal, where the TMC had remained in power for over a decade.

Banerjee also alleged that vote counting was deliberately disrupted to project a favourable outcome for the BJP. She claimed that officials linked to enforcement agencies were involved in influencing the process, though no evidence was presented in support of the allegation. In her remarks, Banerjee said opposition parties were coordinating responses to what she described as “systemic irregularities” during the election. She further alleged widespread intimidation of party workers, including threats against women leaders, and claimed that political violence had intensified during and after the vote counting process.
Despite the setback, Banerjee ruled out resignation, asserting that the TMC was defeated due to what she termed a “conspiracy” rather than voter rejection. She maintained that the party would continue its political fight and coordinate with other opposition groups. The BJP has rejected all allegations made by Banerjee, calling them politically motivated and aimed at discrediting the election outcome. The controversy has further deepened political divisions in the state, with both sides maintaining sharply contrasting interpretations of the results.
