The Kozhikode District administration has partially lifted traffic restrictions on Thamarassery Ghat Road, a crucial artery connecting Kozhikode to Wayanad, following a series of disruptive landslides. District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh announced on Sunday that multi-axle vehicles, along with other vehicles, can now traverse the route under specific conditions, marking a cautious step toward normalcy.
The road, notorious for its treacherous curves and scenic viewpoints, has been plagued by frequent landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in recent weeks. To ensure safety, one-way traffic regulations will remain in effect, with vehicles from both directions permitted to pass only at designated intervals under strict police supervision. Authorities have warned that any resurgence of heavy rains could prompt the reimposition of restrictions, urging drivers to stay vigilant.
The District Collector emphasized that the ban on tourists stopping at the ghat’s iconic viewpoint remains firmly in place. "No vehicles are allowed to stop, and passengers must not alight at the viewpoint," Singh stated, citing ongoing safety concerns due to the unstable terrain.

The decision to allow multi-axle vehicles comes as rainfall has subsided, reducing the immediate risk of further landslides. However, the road’s challenges were highlighted shortly after the restrictions were eased when a truck heading to Kozhikode lost control at the ninth curve, crashing into a boundary wall and causing a temporary traffic snarl. Police and emergency crews swiftly deployed a heavy crane to clear the vehicle, restoring movement on the ghat.
Local residents and businesses dependent on the route have expressed cautious optimism. "This road is our lifeline," said Anil Kumar, a shopkeeper in Wayanad. "The landslides caused massive delays, but this reopening is a step forward, provided the weather cooperates."
Authorities continue to monitor weather patterns closely, with teams on standby to respond to any further incidents. Commuters are advised to adhere to police instructions and avoid unnecessary stops to ensure smooth and safe travel along this critical route.
