Mumbai’s KEM Hospital has placed MBBS student Sejal Pawar on 15-day forced leave after a controversy erupted over remarks made during a comedy show, which went viral on social media. The action follows allegations that statements made in connection with the event included references to corpses, sparking public outrage and institutional scrutiny.
The hospital administration has also directed that Pawar’s parents be called in for counselling as part of disciplinary proceedings. Alongside this measure, the institution has proposed the formation of a five-member inquiry committee to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident and its broader implications within the college environment.
According to the proposed structure, the committee will include one retired faculty member, three senior faculty members, and one external journalist. The inclusion of an external member is intended to ensure impartiality and transparency in the review process as the institution examines the matter.

Officials stated that a preliminary inquiry had already been conducted, after which the administration concluded that a more comprehensive investigation was required. The committee has been instructed to examine all aspects of the incident and submit its findings within seven working days to ensure timely action.
In response to the controversy, Sejal Pawar submitted a written apology on Friday, acknowledging that some of her statements were inappropriate and may have caused distress. The apology was taken on record as part of the ongoing disciplinary process, though the institution has maintained that further review is necessary before any final conclusions are drawn.
The incident gained attention after videos from a Pranit More comedy show circulated widely on social media, triggering debate and criticism. The hospital administration has reiterated that it is taking the matter seriously, emphasizing the need to uphold professional conduct and sensitivity within medical training environments.
