The Karnataka government is set to pass a resolution opposing the recently enacted VB-G RAM G Act during the joint session of the state legislature from January 22 to 31. A special cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah approved the move, emphasizing the Act’s potential negative impact on rural employment and village governance.
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said the resolution will demand the withdrawal of the new Act and restoration of the old MGNREGA framework. “In the session, the VB-G RAM G Act and its impact on society and the rural economy will be discussed in detail, and a resolution will be passed seeking its withdrawal,” he noted.
Patil described the Act as “anti-poor and anti-people,” arguing it weakens village panchayats by allowing officers, rather than local bodies, to determine the work to be undertaken. The minister also highlighted that the new law threatens the right of rural citizens to guaranteed employment, a core provision under MGNREGA.

The Karnataka government plans to raise public awareness about the Act’s implications, calling it a threat to rural livelihoods. “We will go to the people’s court by creating awareness about the negative impact the new Act will have on the rural economy,” Patil said, emphasizing the state’s proactive stance.
Patil further noted that several other states, including Punjab and Tamil Nadu, have voiced opposition to the Act. He stressed that the objection is not merely about employment distribution but about protecting the legal rights of rural citizens, including their ability to demand compensation and local oversight of development works.
With the legislature session beginning on January 22, the Karnataka government is expected to formally table the resolution, marking a significant political push to pressure the Union government into reconsidering the Act and safeguarding rural rights.
