In a stunning move, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the complete withdrawal of the final notification to acquire 1,777 acres of fertile agricultural land in Devanahalli, near Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, following fierce protests from local farmers.
The decision comes after both preliminary and final notifications were issued to acquire the land for an industrial development project. “We’ve scrapped the entire plan to acquire the 1,777 acres. However, we’ll welcome land offered voluntarily by farmers for industrial growth,” Siddaramaiah told reporters.
After thoroughly weighing the project’s benefits against the farmers’ concerns, the government decided to halt the acquisition. “Industrial progress is important, but we won’t force farmers. Those who choose to offer their land will receive fair compensation or a share of developed land,” the CM stated, adding that 50% of any developed land would be returned to participating farmers.

The Chief Minister emphasized that unwilling farmers’ lands would remain untouched, preserving their agricultural fields. “This decision applies only to Devanahalli, as the land here is in a green belt, actively farmed, and vital to farmers’ livelihoods,” he clarified, noting that similar demands elsewhere in Karnataka would be evaluated separately.
Siddaramaiah revealed that the government held multiple rounds of talks—five to six meetings—with farmers, protestors, and local representatives, including Devanahalli MLA and Food and Civil Supplies Minister K H Muniyappa, who backed the farmers’ stance. The decision was warmly received by farmers, public representatives, and protest groups, including progressive organizations and left-leaning parties.
“This was a historic struggle by the farmers, supported by many groups,” Siddaramaiah remarked, acknowledging the widespread agitation that influenced the government’s rethink.
The CM assured that any future land deals in the area would prioritize voluntary participation, with enhanced compensation or larger shares of developed land for farmers who opt in. For now, the fertile fields near Bengaluru’s airport remain in the hands of those who till them.
