Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary firmly stated on Friday that India’s policy sovereignty will not be compromised for trade diplomacy, responding to the recent escalation of US tariffs on Indian goods to 50%. Speaking at a skills summit organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi, Chaudhary emphasized that national interest remains paramount amid a turbulent global economic landscape.
The US, under President Donald Trump, imposed a 25% tariff on Indian exports effective August 7, followed by an additional 25% levy linked to India’s purchases of Russian oil, set to take effect on August 27. This makes the total duty among the highest imposed by the US on any country. The move has sparked concerns about its impact on Indian exporters, particularly in sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and electronics.
Chaudhary acknowledged the strong support from Indian industry, describing the situation as a “battle” for the government. “The global economy is in flux, and we need full industry backing to navigate these challenges,” he said, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting India’s economic autonomy. He called for collaborative efforts to strengthen domestic industries and enhance skill development to counter external pressures.

With the US tariffs posing a significant challenge, Chaudhary urged stakeholders to focus on building resilience through innovation and self-reliance to safeguard India’s economic interests.
