As India gears up for its 79th Independence Day, Jammu region has transformed into a fortress with intensified security measures to ensure peaceful celebrations. A multi-tiered security grid, comprising the Indian Army, Border Security Force (BSF), and Jammu and Kashmir Police, is on high alert along the 225 km Line of Control (LoC) and 192 km International Border (IB) to thwart cross-border threats, officials confirmed.
In response to recent infiltration attempts, including a foiled bid in Uri where one soldier was killed, security forces have ramped up patrols, vehicle checks, and area domination across all 10 districts, with heightened focus on militancy-prone areas like Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, Doda, Udhampur, and Kathua. Quick Response Teams (QRTs) are deployed in Jammu city, while additional checkpoints and frisking operations are in place at key entry-exit points and along the Jammu-Srinagar and Jammu-Pathankot highways.
The Indian Army has introduced a three-tiered robotic counter-infiltration grid in Kupwara’s Tangdhar village, incorporating advanced surveillance tools like radars, thermal imaging, and UAVs, alongside mine-based obstacles and ground patrols. In Samba, a night curfew within 2 km of the IB has been enforced to aid BSF monitoring, effective from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for two months.

The main Independence Day event in Jammu will be held at Maulana Azad Stadium, where Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary will unfurl the Tricolour. In Srinagar, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will lead celebrations at Bakshi Stadium, with both venues under stringent security, including anti-sabotage checks, sniffer dogs, and CRPF-CISF deployments. Udhampur’s Additional Superintendent of Police Sandeep Bhat emphasized comprehensive measures covering highways and hilly areas like Basantgarh and Latti.
Recent intelligence reports of Pakistan-backed terrorist movements in Doda, Kishtwar, and Udhampur have prompted intensified surveillance, with CCTV monitoring and drone deployments on border roads. The police have issued advisories in Rajouri and Poonch, urging residents to report suspicious activities, while cultural events and Har Ghar Tiranga campaigns continue to foster unity. With these robust measures, Jammu aims to celebrate Independence Day with pride and security, despite ongoing regional challenges.
