External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday called for deeper cooperation among BRICS nations, warning that rising geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and disruptions in global supply chains are reshaping the international order. Speaking during the opening remarks at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaishankar said the grouping has an increasingly important role to play in stabilising a rapidly changing world.
The minister described the current global environment as one of “considerable flux,” marked by ongoing conflicts, trade volatility, technological competition, and climate-related challenges. He said there was growing expectation from emerging economies and developing nations for BRICS to act as a constructive force amid increasing global fragmentation. According to Jaishankar, the grouping must work toward building greater convergence on critical international issues as global relations become more uncertain and complex.
Economic resilience emerged as a key focus of Jaishankar’s address, with the minister stressing the importance of reliable supply chains and diversified markets. He said recent disruptions in global manufacturing and trade networks had highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by many economies, particularly developing countries. “Reliable supply chains and diversified markets are essential components of economic resilience. We must focus on both,” he said during the meeting.

Jaishankar also highlighted the pressures faced by developing economies in areas including food, fertiliser, energy, healthcare, and access to finance. He noted that stronger coordination within BRICS could help member nations and partner countries respond more effectively to these shared challenges. The minister further pointed to the rapid pace of technological change, saying advancements in technology could support inclusive growth and strengthen governance systems across economies if utilised effectively.
Referring to India’s BRICS chairship, Jaishankar said New Delhi had organised more than 80 BRICS-related meetings with active participation from member nations. He added that India had worked to engage partner countries in an effort to make the grouping more inclusive while advancing discussions on institutional reforms and the integration of newer members into the bloc.
The minister also underscored the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in addressing global peace and security concerns, including terrorism. He said maintaining consensus among member countries would be essential for the smooth functioning and future expansion of BRICS. Jaishankar’s remarks come at a time when the grouping is seeking a larger role in global governance amid shifting geopolitical alignments and growing calls from developing nations for a more balanced international order.
