The Indian government has installed 3.46 crore smart electricity meters across the country under various initiatives, with 2.27 crore deployed under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik told the Rajya Sabha on July 21, 2025. The RDSS, with an outlay of Rs 3,03,758 crore and Rs 97,631 crore in budgetary support, has sanctioned 20.33 crore smart meters as of June 2025, transforming India’s power distribution landscape.
These smart meters aim to enhance energy efficiency, reduce losses, and improve billing accuracy for consumers. The government’s push aligns with its broader vision for a modernized, sustainable power sector.
Additionally, Naik highlighted progress in pumped storage projects (PSPs), with 29 private-sector PSPs totaling 48,700 MW currently under survey and investigation for detailed project reports (DPRs). Since 2002-03, the Central Electricity Authority has approved DPRs for 89 hydroelectric projects (47,780 MW) and 12 PSPs (15,350 MW), signaling a robust commitment to renewable energy infrastructure.
