Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his office today, citing health reasons. The resignation, effective immediately, was formally submitted to President Droupadi Murmu under Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution. Dhankhar, who assumed the vice presidency on August 11, 2022, also stepped down as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, leaving a significant void in the upper house.
In his heartfelt resignation letter, Dhankhar expressed deep gratitude to the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Council of Ministers, and Members of Parliament for their unwavering support during his tenure. “It has been an honor to serve the nation, but my health no longer permits me to continue in this role,” he stated, reflecting on his nearly three-year stint marked by efforts to foster parliamentary decorum.
The sudden exit has sparked speculation about potential successors, with political circles abuzz over who will fill the vacancy. Per Article 68(2) of the Constitution, an election to appoint a new Vice President must be held promptly. The Election Commission is expected to announce a schedule soon, as the nation braces for a high-stakes transition.
