Delhi-NCR is expected to witness a spell of unsettled weather on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and isolated light rainfall across parts of the region. The weather change is likely to provide temporary relief from the heat, although widespread rainfall is not anticipated. Residents have been advised to remain cautious as strong winds and thunderstorm activity may affect visibility and outdoor activities.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in New Delhi, the national capital is likely to experience partly cloudy skies during the day, gradually becoming generally cloudy by evening. The IMD has predicted very light to light rainfall at isolated locations, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, particularly during the evening and night hours. Weather officials said conditions may vary across the region, with some areas receiving brief showers while others remain dry.
The department has also warned of strong surface winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially touching 60 kilometers per hour during thunderstorm activity. Such conditions could lead to temporary disruptions, including reduced visibility for motorists, difficulties for outdoor workers, and minor interruptions to daily activities. Authorities have urged residents to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions during periods of adverse weather.

Meteorologists attribute the changing weather conditions to a western disturbance embedded in the middle tropospheric westerlies. The system is being supported by associated cyclonic circulations over central Pakistan and adjoining regions. In addition, multiple troughs extending across northwestern and central India are contributing to atmospheric instability, creating favorable conditions for cloud development, gusty winds, and isolated rainfall over Delhi-NCR.
Despite the forecast of thunderstorms and rain, the IMD has clarified that widespread precipitation is unlikely. Most localities are expected to remain largely dry, while a few isolated areas may witness short-duration showers. The weather office has forecast maximum temperatures between 36°C and 38°C on May 31, while minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 22°C and 24°C. These values are below the seasonal average, offering relatively milder conditions compared to the typical late-May heat.
Looking ahead, weather conditions are expected to improve from June 1 onward. The IMD's five-day forecast indicates mainly clear to partly cloudy skies across Delhi-NCR, with temperatures gradually rising over the coming days. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 37°C to 39°C on June 1, increase to 38°C to 40°C on June 2, and could touch 40°C to 42°C by June 4, signaling the return of hotter summer weather across the national capital region.
