The India Meteorological Department (India Meteorological Department) has forecast thunderstorms, light rain, lightning and gusty winds across several parts of North India over the next two days, offering temporary relief from ongoing heatwave conditions affecting large parts of the country.
According to the forecast, northern and northwestern states including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are expected to witness thunderstorms with rain beginning May 11. The system is likely to bring scattered rainfall activity accompanied by lightning in several districts of these regions.
In the national capital region, Delhi has been placed under a yellow alert for Monday and Tuesday. Weather conditions are expected to become increasingly cloudy by evening, with forecasts indicating light rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds ranging between 30–40 kmph, with possible gusts up to 50 kmph, are also likely during this period.

Despite the incoming weather change, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in parts of western and central India. States such as Rajasthan and Gujarat may continue to experience intense heat until at least May 15. Additionally, regions of Madhya Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan could see extreme temperatures on May 12 and 13, according to the forecast.
In contrast, southern India is also expected to receive heavy rainfall in the coming week. Areas including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may experience intensified rainfall activity. In Delhi, temperatures are expected to hover between 37°C and 39°C on Monday before gradually easing due to cloud cover and intermittent rain.
