A tragic rail accident in Nadia district, West Bengal, claimed the lives of four BJP supporters and left another critically injured early Saturday, just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to attend a public rally and administrative meeting in Taherpur.
Police and local sources reported that around 40 BJP supporters from Murshidabad had traveled by bus to attend the Prime Minister’s programme in the Ranaghat Lok Sabha constituency. Five of the supporters reportedly got down near the railway tracks between Taherpur and Badkulla stations to relieve themselves.
Due to dense fog in the area, the fast-moving train on the Krishnanagar-Ranaghat line could not be seen in time, resulting in the mishap. Three individuals died on the spot, while two others were critically injured and rushed to hospital, where one later succumbed to injuries. The other remains in critical condition.

Police confirmed that all four deceased were residents of the Barwan police station area in Murshidabad district. The bodies have been recovered and taken to the Krishnanagar Government Railway Police (GRP) station for further legal and procedural formalities.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident, with officials examining train schedules, fog conditions, and safety measures in place near railway tracks. Local police have also urged travelers to exercise extreme caution near railway lines, especially during foggy conditions.
The incident casts a shadow over the political event, highlighting safety risks faced by party supporters traveling long distances to attend rallies. Emergency services and medical teams are on alert to manage any further complications arising from the accident.
