Hundreds of farmers from across India converged at Jantar Mantar on Monday morning for a 'Kisan Mahapanchayat' organized by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), reigniting their push for long-pending demands. The gathering focuses on securing a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops, excluding agriculture, dairy, poultry, and fisheries from proposed US trade agreements, and withdrawing police cases filed against farmers during the 2020-21 protests against the now-repealed farm laws.
The SKM, an umbrella body of over 40 farmer unions, emphasized that the event will remain peaceful and urged widespread participation. This mahapanchayat follows the historic 2020-21 farmers’ movement, where thousands camped at Delhi’s borders—Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur—for over a year, compelling the government to repeal three contentious agricultural laws. Despite the withdrawal, farmers accuse the Centre of failing to honor commitments, particularly on MSP legislation and case dismissals.
Security was tightened with approximately 1,200 police personnel deployed at Jantar Mantar to maintain order. A senior officer stated, “We are ensuring no disruptions occur, with strict vigilance at the site and nearby borders.” The event, echoing a similar mahapanchayat in August 2022, aims to strategize the farmers’ ongoing struggle, with leaders like Rakesh Tikait expected to address the crowd.
