An elderly Sikh man was allegedly targeted in a hate-motivated assault on April 22 in Woodstock, Ontario, according to the Woodstock Police Service. Authorities said the incident involved racist abuse directed at the victim while he was walking along a sidewalk, raising concerns about rising hate-related incidents in the community.
Police stated that the victim was approached by a youth who allegedly shoved him and used racist slurs, including telling him to “get out of my country.” Investigators believe the man was specifically targeted based on his ethnicity. Despite the aggression, officials confirmed that the elderly victim did not suffer any physical injuries during the incident.
Following the confrontation, the suspect reportedly fled the scene by jumping a fence onto the grounds of Turtle Island School before leaving the area. Police clarified that no students or staff at the school were harmed during the incident. The swift escape prompted an immediate investigation and search operation by local authorities.

In a public statement, the Woodstock Police Service condemned the attack, saying that “acts of hate have no place in our community.” Officials urged residents to report any similar incidents and assured that steps are being taken to ensure public safety and accountability. The police also emphasized their commitment to protecting all residents regardless of background.
The World Sikh Organisation also strongly condemned the assault, calling it unacceptable and expressing concern over what it described as a broader pattern of targeted hate incidents. The group urged stronger preventive measures, improved reporting systems, and greater public awareness to address rising concerns. It also encouraged victims and witnesses of hate crimes to come forward and report such incidents to authorities and community organisations.
