President Droupadi Murmu lauded doctors for their pivotal role in India’s development during the first convocation of AIIMS-Kalyani in West Bengal’s Nadia district. Highlighting their contributions to eradicating diseases, boosting life expectancy from 32 years at Independence to 70 today, and advancing vaccination, Murmu urged young doctors to tackle modern health challenges like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. She emphasized their role surpasses that of government and stakeholders in promoting public health.
Speaking to the graduating class of 48 MBBS students and nine Post-Doctoral Certificate Course scholars—the institute’s first batch admitted in 2019—Murmu praised their historic role as AIIMS-Kalyani’s founding alumni. She encouraged them to make the institute a national pride and to emulate Dr. B C Roy, West Bengal’s second chief minister and a doctor who provided free medical services. Murmu advised lifelong learning to stay abreast of medical advancements and stressed the importance of doctors promoting healthy lifestyles to prevent non-genetic health issues.
The event, attended by Governor C V Ananda Bose, Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav, and others, marked a milestone for AIIMS-Kalyani. Murmu congratulated the students, faculty, and parents, particularly honoring medal recipients for their excellence. Urging doctors to offer lifestyle advice alongside treatments, she envisioned them as role models for healthier communities, shaping both the institute’s legacy and India’s healthcare future.
