Dayalu Ammal, wife of late former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and mother of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President M. K. Stalin, was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai on Tuesday after her health reportedly deteriorated due to age-related complications. Hospital sources said she was rushed to the medical facility after her condition worsened and is currently under the care of a specialised team of doctors.
According to sources familiar with the development, Dayalu Ammal has been dealing with age-related health issues for the past several years and has remained under continuous medical supervision at her residence in Gopalapuram, Chennai. As a precautionary measure, she was shifted to the private hospital after doctors assessed that she required closer observation and specialised medical attention. Upon arrival, she was provided immediate treatment, and hospital sources indicated that her condition is currently stable.
Soon after receiving information about his mother's health, M.K. Stalin reached the hospital along with members of the Karunanidhi family. He is understood to have met the senior doctors overseeing Dayalu Ammal's treatment and sought detailed updates on her condition, treatment protocol, and the care being administered. Family members have remained at the hospital while doctors continue to monitor her recovery.

Although the hospital has not released a detailed medical bulletin, officials said Dayalu Ammal is under constant observation and is responding to treatment. Doctors are closely monitoring her vital parameters while continuing routine medical management. Sources stressed that her admission was prompted by a sudden deterioration in her health rather than any specific medical emergency disclosed publicly.
Dayalu Ammal has largely stayed away from public life in recent years because of her advancing age and health concerns. She has remained under regular medical care since the passing of her husband, M. Karunanidhi, in 2018. Karunanidhi, one of Tamil Nadu's longest-serving Chief Ministers and a towering figure in Dravidian politics, led the DMK for decades and played a defining role in shaping the state's political landscape. Following his death, M.K. Stalin assumed leadership of the party and has since continued its political legacy.
As the matriarch of the Karunanidhi family, Dayalu Ammal has remained an important figure within the DMK's extended political family, though she has rarely appeared in public because of her health. News of her hospitalisation prompted concern among party workers and supporters, many of whom have been awaiting official updates on her condition. Senior DMK leaders have also been in touch with the family following her admission.
Hospital authorities have maintained that Dayalu Ammal's condition is stable but continue to keep her under close medical supervision as a precaution. Further updates are expected based on her response to treatment over the coming days. For now, doctors remain focused on monitoring her health, while family members continue to stay by her side at the Chennai hospital.
