The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) marked a historic milestone on Thursday by operating its first-ever train, TS#01, as a special service to celebrate 23 years of metro operations. The commemorative run took place on the Shahdara–Tis Hazari corridor, the very section where Delhi Metro passenger services were inaugurated in 2002.
To mark the occasion, the train was decorated with flowers and a special anniversary banner. Passengers travelling on the service were welcomed with flowers, allowing them to relive the experience of the metro’s inaugural journey from more than two decades ago. December 24 officially marked the completion of 23 years of Delhi Metro operations.
TS#01 remains in active service even today, reflecting the system’s engineering reliability and long-term planning. Initially launched as a four-coach train, it was upgraded to six coaches in 2014 and further expanded to eight coaches in 2023 to meet the growing commuter demand across the network.

According to DMRC, the train has covered nearly 2.9 million kilometres since its launch and safely carried over 60 million passengers. It has also recorded approximately 2.4 million door operations, demonstrating its durability and consistent performance over the years.
Manufactured by the MRM Consortium of South Korea, TS#01 was shipped to Kolkata before being transported to Delhi via the Indian Railways network. The train originally cost around ₹24 crore and features an advanced propulsion system that regenerates nearly 40 percent of consumed power through regenerative braking, helping reduce carbon emissions.
The train has undergone two major overhauls and a mid-life rehabilitation in 2024, which introduced several modern upgrades such as CCTV cameras, emergency alarms, LCD route maps, improved fire detection systems, and a new passenger information system. With a mean distance between failures of 85,000 km—well above contractual standards—TS#01 continues to stand as a symbol of Delhi Metro’s journey toward safe, reliable, and sustainable urban transport.
