A civil court in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has ordered the Indian National Congress party and four of its prominent leaders to remove a deepfake video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani from all social media platforms. The directive came during a hearing on Thursday in a defamation suit filed by Adani Enterprises Limited, which alleged that the video contained defamatory content harmful to the company's reputation.
The video, posted on the official Congress X handle on December 17, depicted a fabricated conversation between Modi and Adani, accompanied by a caption suggesting close ties and implying corruption: "Modi-Adani Bhai Bhai, Desh Bechkar Khai Malai" (translated as "Modi and Adani are like brothers, selling off the country and enjoying the spoils"). Additional Civil Judge Shrikant Sharma issued the order, directing the Congress party, along with leaders Jairam Ramesh, Supriya Shrinate, Pawan Khera, and Uday Bhanu Chib, to comply.
The court mandated removal of the video within 48 hours from the date of the order, with the restriction remaining in effect until the next hearing scheduled for December 29. Reports indicate that failure to comply could lead to further directives for platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Google to intervene and take down the content.

This case highlights growing concerns over the use of deepfake technology in political discourse in India, where manipulated media has increasingly been employed to target public figures. Adani Enterprises maintains that the video spreads false and defamatory allegations, while the incident underscores ongoing political tensions between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress regarding alleged ties between the government and major business conglomerates. The matter remains pending further judicial review.
