Tamil Nadu's ruling alliance, headed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has been given a new name that seeks to underline its stated commitment to secularism and social justice ahead of the upcoming by-election. The alliance has been named the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance, Chief Minister Vijay said. The grouping comprises TVK, Congress, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). TVK will lead the alliance as it prepares for its first electoral contest under the new arrangement.

The naming of the alliance gives the grouping a distinct political identity as its constituent parties prepare to campaign together. The words “Secular Social Justice Victory” reflect the principles that the alliance says will form the basis of its political platform. The decision also comes at a crucial stage for the parties as they seek to consolidate their positions ahead of the upcoming by-election. With TVK at the helm, the alliance brings together parties with different organisational structures and political bases under a common banner.

VCK leader SS Balaji explained how the alliance's name was finalised, saying the idea came from Chief Minister Vijay. Balaji said the choice of name was intended to communicate the alliance's political position clearly to voters. By putting secularism and social justice at the centre of its identity, the alliance has sought to highlight issues that it believes can provide common ground among its participating parties. The name is also expected to serve as an important part of the grouping's campaign messaging as it enters the electoral arena.

Balaji further said the name would make it clear that the alliance would oppose the BJP and what he described as “Fascist forces”. His comments provided a sharper indication of the political positioning the alliance intends to adopt during the campaign. The opposition to the BJP is likely to form an important part of the alliance's electoral narrative, while its emphasis on secularism is intended to distinguish the grouping from political formations that its leaders believe represent a different ideological approach.

The VCK leader also addressed criticism that TVK had been perceived as being soft towards the BJP. Balaji said the new name would bring greater clarity to the alliance's political position and remove ambiguity over where the grouping stands. His remarks indicate that the alliance intends to use its collective identity to counter that perception and establish a clearer ideological distinction. The emphasis on secularism and social justice is therefore not merely part of the alliance's formal name but is also being presented by its leaders as a statement of political intent.

The alliance's electoral debut will come during the upcoming by-election, providing its constituent parties with an early opportunity to test their combined political strategy. TVK will lead the alliance, while Congress, MDMK, IUML and VCK will be its other constituents. The grouping's performance will be closely watched as an early indication of how effectively the parties can coordinate their campaign and translate their shared political messaging into electoral support. For TVK, the contest will also provide an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to lead a broader alliance and establish itself as a significant force in Tamil Nadu politics.
