The proposed legislation, called the "AI Kill Switch Act," would allow U.S. homeland security officials to order technology companies to shut down AI models in situations where systems are deemed to have moved beyond intended control.

The bill has been introduced by Democratic Representative Ted Lieu and Republican Representative Nathaniel Moran, reflecting growing bipartisan concern over the potential risks associated with rapidly developing AI technologies. According to the proposed legislation, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would have the authority to intervene during what lawmakers describe as a "loss-of-control scenario," where an AI system carries out dangerous actions that were not intended by its developer.
