Residents of Nellutla village in Telangana's Jangaon district performed the traditional Kappathalli Aata ritual on Friday, praying for rainfall as the region continues to experience a prolonged dry spell during the crucial agricultural sowing season. The ceremony was organised as the Mrigasira Karte, a period traditionally associated with the arrival of monsoon showers, neared its end without adequate rainfall, leaving farmers increasingly anxious about their crops.
The ritual was led by village Sarpanch Ramakrishna and witnessed participation from women, youth and farmers in large numbers. As part of the centuries-old tradition, villagers collected frogs, decorated them with turmeric and flowers, and carried them in a procession through the village. The symbolic ceremony was accompanied by folk songs and prayers offered from house to house, reflecting the community's collective appeal for favourable rains and a successful farming season.
Farmers said the delayed monsoon has severely affected agricultural activities, particularly for small and marginal cultivators who depend on seasonal rainfall. Many fields remain dry and unploughed, forcing farmers to postpone sowing operations for key crops such as cotton and paddy. "We performed Kappathalli Aata, praying for rain and a good harvest. The farming season has begun, but without rain we are helpless. We are hoping nature will bless us soon," Sarpanch Ramakrishna said during the event.

The rainfall deficit has created growing uncertainty across several parts of Telangana, where weak monsoon activity has disrupted normal farming schedules. Weather experts have linked the ongoing dry spell to the influence of El Niño conditions, which have affected the progress and distribution of the southwest monsoon. The lack of consistent rainfall has delayed field preparation and increased dependence on groundwater for irrigation, adding to cultivation costs.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon activity over the region has remained uneven and below normal during the early part of the season. Agricultural experts warn that continued delays in rainfall could impact crop establishment and reduce yields if sowing is postponed much further. Farmers across the state are closely monitoring weather forecasts while hoping for improved monsoon conditions in the coming weeks.
For the people of Nellutla, the Kappathalli Aata ritual represents more than a cultural tradition—it reflects the deep connection between rural communities and the monsoon that sustains their livelihoods. As uncertainty over rainfall persists, villagers continue to place their faith in age-old customs while awaiting the rains that are vital for their crops, incomes and overall agricultural prosperity.
