A 30-year-old software professional from Telangana, Mohammed Nizamuddin, was fatally shot by police in Santa Clara, California, on September 3, 2025, following a reported altercation with his roommate. The incident, which has left his family in Mahabubnagar district reeling, has sparked allegations of racial discrimination and systemic injustice, raising questions about the treatment of Indian professionals abroad.
According to Nizamuddin’s family, the incident stemmed from a domestic disturbance involving his roommate. A video released by the Santa Clara Police Department details a 911 call reporting a violent clash between the two. Upon arrival, officers found Nizamuddin allegedly pinning his roommate to the ground, holding a knife. Santa Clara Police Chief Morgan stated that an officer issued verbal commands to de-escalate the situation, but when Nizamuddin reportedly moved the knife toward the victim, the officer fired four shots. Nizamuddin was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In a haunting social media post prior to his death, Nizamuddin claimed to be a victim of relentless racial hatred, discrimination, and workplace injustices. “I have faced racial harassment, wage fraud, wrongful termination, and obstruction of justice,” he wrote, accusing his former employer and a “racist detective” of perpetuating hostility. He further alleged that his food had been poisoned and that he faced eviction for standing up against these injustices. “The oppression of corporate tyrants must end,” he declared, vowing to fight against the odds.

Nizamuddin’s father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, shared his grief with PTI, recounting details from a friend of his son about the tragic event. He has appealed to the Indian government to coordinate with the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate General of India in San Francisco to facilitate the repatriation of his son’s remains to Mahabubnagar. The family seeks closure and justice, as they grapple with the loss of a son who had pursued the American dream after completing his Master’s degree in the U.S.
The incident has drawn attention from community leaders in India, with Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan urging External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to intervene and support the family. As outrage grows, the case underscores broader concerns about racial discrimination and the safety of Indian professionals abroad. The Indian diaspora and local communities await further details as investigations continue, hoping for transparency and accountability in this heartbreaking tragedy.
