Pakistan’s relentless monsoon rains claimed five more lives, raising the death toll to 116 since June 26, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported Tuesday. Punjab recorded four deaths and 38 injuries, while Sindh reported one death and three injuries. The fatalities include 44 in Punjab, 37 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 18 in Sindh, 16 in Balochistan, and one in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Of the 253 injured, Punjab accounts for 149, KP 55, Sindh 40, Balochistan four, and PoK five.
The NDMA noted 485 houses damaged and 117 livestock lost, with 25 rescue operations saving 262 people. Twenty-six relief and medical camps are supporting affected communities. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts heavy rainfall through July 17, driven by a low-pressure system over Rajasthan and a westerly wave, affecting Punjab, KP, PoK, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, and parts of Balochistan and Sindh. Scattered heavy rains may trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in hilly areas.
Authorities are mobilizing emergency response teams and clearing drainage systems to mitigate urban flooding risks in cities like Lahore. The NDMA urges residents to avoid flood-prone areas, as Pakistan grapples with increasingly severe monsoon seasons, exacerbated by climate change, following the devastating 2022 floods that killed over 1,700.
