King Charles III is set to become the first British monarch to publicly disclose his personal tax bill, marking a significant step towards greater transparency within the royal family. The announcement was made by Buckingham Palace as public scrutiny of royal finances continues to intensify. The King's tax information is expected to be released as part of the annual royal financial accounts scheduled for publication later this week.
British monarchs are legally exempt from paying certain taxes, including income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax. However, members of the royal family have voluntarily paid some taxes for decades. Since 1993, beginning with the late Queen Elizabeth II, British sovereigns have voluntarily paid income tax and capital gains tax despite not being legally required to do so.
According to Buckingham Palace, the decision to disclose the King's personal tax details was made at his own request. Palace officials described the move as part of a broader effort to modernise the monarchy and improve public understanding of royal finances. The disclosure is intended to provide greater clarity about the financial arrangements surrounding the monarchy while placing them within their constitutional and historical context.

The announcement comes at a time when the finances of the royal family have attracted increased public attention. Recent controversies involving the King's younger brother, Prince Andrew, have prompted renewed debate over financial transparency within the monarchy. Government auditors recently revealed details of income earned by Andrew through property arrangements, adding to scrutiny of royal financial affairs.
Before ascending the throne in 2022, Charles had already established a precedent for openness by disclosing tax payments made during his time as the Prince of Wales. His latest decision extends that approach to his role as monarch and is expected to provide the public with a clearer picture of the taxes he pays on private sources of income. The disclosure will form part of wider financial reporting released by the royal household.
One of the King's principal sources of private income is the historic Duchy of Lancaster, a vast portfolio of land, property and investments held in trust for the sovereign. The estate generated an annual income of approximately £26.8 million during the 2024–25 financial year. Alongside the privately held Duchy income, the monarchy also receives funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is provided by the UK government to support official royal duties and operations.
