Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Thursday called on BRICS nations to unite against what he described as “US bullying,” urging member countries to collectively resist coercive global practices during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi. His remarks came amid growing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and wider global power alignments.
Addressing delegates at the summit, Araghchi said many nations represented in the room were familiar with different forms of external pressure and coercion. He argued that BRICS countries should work together more assertively to challenge such practices. “It is high time for us to jointly step up and work towards making clear that those practices belong in the dustbin of history,” the Iranian foreign minister said during his speech.
Araghchi further stated that countries within the BRICS grouping now faced increasingly common geopolitical challenges and suggested that declining global powers were attempting to maintain dominance through pressure tactics. Referring indirectly to the United States, he said history had shown that “empires in decline” often resorted to aggressive measures to preserve influence. His comments reflected Iran’s continued criticism of American sanctions, military pressure, and diplomatic policies toward Tehran.

The remarks came as foreign ministers and senior officials from major emerging economies gathered in India for the BRICS ministerial meeting, which has focused on multilateral cooperation, economic coordination, and global security concerns. The forum has increasingly become a platform for member nations to advocate reforms in global governance structures and push for greater representation of developing economies in international institutions.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Araghchi in what officials described as an important bilateral engagement between India and Iran. The discussions reportedly focused on regional stability, connectivity, energy cooperation, and broader strategic ties between the two countries, which share longstanding civilisational and economic relations.
The BRICS meeting is taking place at a time of heightened international uncertainty, with ongoing conflicts in West Asia, tensions involving Iran and the United States, and broader concerns over global trade and energy security shaping diplomatic discussions. Analysts noted that Araghchi’s remarks underscore how BRICS is increasingly being used by some member states as a platform to challenge Western-led geopolitical and economic influence.
