Miryang, a city in South Korea’s Gyeongsangnam-do Province, became the stage for a historic performance of India’s classical dance form, Kathakali, marking a significant moment of cultural exchange. Hosted at Yoga Culture Town, the event brought the ancient Mahabharata epic to life through Kathakali’s intricate costumes, vibrant makeup, and expressive storytelling. The Embassy of India in South Korea expressed gratitude to Miryang City and Yoga Culture Town for facilitating this landmark cultural showcase.
The performance was part of the 11th Sarang Festival, an annual celebration of Indian culture in South Korea, which kicked off with a Kathakali presentation in Seoul. Led by renowned artist Sreenathan Sreenatha Mandiram, the troupe performed Duryodhanavadham from the Mahabharata, captivating audiences with its hour-long spectacle. Ambassador-designate Gourangalal Das, alongside Deputy Chief of Mission Nishi Kant Singh and Seodaemun-gu Mayor Lee Sung-heon, welcomed approximately 400 guests, including diplomats, cultural figures, and media, highlighting the festival’s role in fostering India-Korea ties.
A day earlier, on October 22, the Kathakali troupe mesmerized audiences at Busan Citizens Hall, where it was paired with the dynamic Chhau dance. The Embassy, in collaboration with Busan University of Foreign Studies, celebrated this fusion as a vibrant symbol of friendship between India and South Korea. The Sarang Festival, also held at Nami Island, featured a range of Indian cultural elements, including music, films, and culinary experiences, drawing enthusiastic participation from local and international attendees.
