Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, during a lecture on 'Ocean of Peace' hosted by the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) in New Delhi, candidly told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that “somebody is not very happy with you” regarding the US’s imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods. Rabuka, on a three-day visit to strengthen Fiji-India ties, added that Modi is “big enough to weather those discomforts,” referencing the strained New Delhi-Washington relations following US President Donald Trump’s tariff hike, including a 25% duty on India’s Russian oil purchases, effective August 27, impacting sectors like shrimp, apparel, leather, and gems.
Rabuka’s visit, his first as Fiji’s leader, saw comprehensive talks with Modi on Monday, yielding seven agreements to enhance cooperation in defence, maritime security, trade, health, and digital technology. Both leaders committed to a peaceful Indo-Pacific, with Modi praising Rabuka’s 'Ocean of Peace' concept, which promotes regional stability and sustainability. Rabuka emphasized its global relevance, noting discussions with leaders like Chinese President Xi Jinping and the need for United Nations support to foster peace.
The Fijian leader underscored the interconnectedness of global events, stating, “Whatever is happening out there is impacting us,” highlighting how trade disputes affect smaller nations. The talks reaffirmed India and Fiji’s shared vision for a resilient Indo-Pacific, with India pledging support for Fiji’s maritime security and climate resilience, solidifying their partnership.
