Bangladesh has shown interest in the possible procurement of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, jointly developed by Pakistan and China, marking a potential shift in South Asia’s defence dynamics. The development emerged after high-level talks between the air force chiefs of Pakistan and Bangladesh, signalling warming military ties between the two countries.
According to a statement by Pakistan’s military media wing, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), detailed discussions were held on the “potential procurement” of the JF-17 Thunder during meetings in Islamabad. While Pakistan has publicly acknowledged these talks, Bangladesh has not officially confirmed any decision to acquire the aircraft.
The JF-17 Thunder is a single-engine, lightweight combat aircraft developed by China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex. Pakistan claims the jet has demonstrated operational effectiveness, though independent assessments of its combat performance remain limited. Experts note that Pakistan relied more heavily on Chinese-origin J-10 fighter jets during its recent conflict with India.

The Bangladeshi delegation, led by Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, also discussed broader defence cooperation, including training, capacity building, aircraft maintenance support, and integration of air defence radar systems. Pakistan offered comprehensive training programmes and assured expedited delivery of Super Mushshak trainer aircraft to support Bangladesh’s air force modernisation.
The outreach reflects improving relations between Dhaka and Islamabad following political changes in Bangladesh in 2024. The two countries have moved to strengthen ties after years of strained relations rooted in the legacy of the 1971 Liberation War, indicating a renewed push toward long-term strategic and defence cooperation.
