Tamil Nadu Finance Minister N Marie Wilson’s remarks delivered on the floor of the state assembly on Monday have ignited a sharp political controversy, with both the DMK and the BJP demanding that the TVK-led government under Chief Minister Vijay order a formal inquiry and remove the minister from the cabinet until the probe is concluded. Wilson stated that during the previous DMK regime he was compelled to pay a substantial sum to officials in Chennai’s school education department in order to secure necessary approvals for his educational institutions. Declaring himself both the evidence and the witness, he added that he remained fully prepared to face any official investigation into the matter.

The comments immediately drew strong reactions from opposition ranks. DMK leader Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi dismissed the allegation as baseless and argued that a sitting minister openly admitting on the assembly floor to having paid a bribe constituted a grave error. He specifically called on the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption to launch an immediate investigation into Wilson on the strength of his own public statement. State BJP president Nainar Nagenthran reinforced the demand for action, noting that both the giving and the receiving of a bribe are criminal offences under law and that the government was obliged to proceed against all parties involved.

Within the ruling side, Health Minister KG Arunraj offered a defence of his colleague, describing Wilson as a whistleblower whose disclosure deserved examination rather than summary dismissal. The contrasting positions have turned the episode into a broader test of the Vijay administration’s willingness to confront claims of past administrative malpractice while managing internal and external political pressure. No official response was forthcoming from the state government when approached for comment, leaving the public record dominated by the competing statements already on record.
