A Hindu man named Mithun Sarkar tragically drowned in Naogaon district after desperately jumping into a body of water to evade a pursuing mob that had accused him of theft, with local police confirming the recovery of his body through a coordinated effort involving fire service personnel on Wednesday.
Naogaon Police Superintendent Mohammad Tariqul Islam detailed that Sarkar was relentlessly chased by the group based on the allegations, leading him to seek escape in the water where he ultimately perished, while authorities have initiated a thorough post-mortem examination and comprehensive investigation to establish the exact sequence of events and any potential criminal liability.
This fatal incident represents the most recent addition to a disturbing series of violent attacks predominantly targeting members of the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, a surge that began intensifying after the death of prominent student leader Sharif Osman Hadi in December and has since spread across multiple districts with reports of lynchings, shootings, and brutal assaults.

Notable among the preceding cases are the Monday executions of Hindu businessman and local newspaper acting editor Rana Pratap Bairagi, who was shot in the head at a bazaar in Jessore district, and grocery shop owner Moni Chakraborty, who was hacked to death with sharp weapons while returning home in Narsingdi, alongside the earlier horrific burning alive of Khokon Chandra Das on New Year's Eve and other mob-related killings tied to rumours of blasphemy or extortion.
The pattern of escalating assaults has raised profound alarm regarding the safety and security of religious minorities in the politically volatile nation, prompting urgent demands from community leaders, human rights organisations, and international observers for swift governmental intervention, enhanced protective measures, and impartial judicial inquiries to curb the violence and restore communal harmony.
