A 47-year-old content creator from Surat has been arrested for allegedly posting an objectionable Reel involving a Rs 500 currency note featuring Mahatma Gandhi, police said. The woman, identified as Simran Patel, lives in the Adajan area of Surat and has around one million followers on Instagram. Police said she uploaded the video on her social media handles on October 1, between 1 pm and 6 pm, a day before Gandhi Jayanti.
According to the Surat Police, the action was taken after a complaint was received from a social worker regarding the Reel. The video allegedly showed Patel handling the currency note featuring Mahatma Gandhi in a manner that police considered objectionable. The timing of the post, which was uploaded on October 1, also drew attention as it came on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, observed across India on October 2.
The Surat Police announced the arrest through its official social media account, sharing a before-and-after clip of Patel. The first part of the clip showed her handling the currency note, while the second showed her after being taken into custody with handcuffs. Police said the arrest followed the complaint over the social media content and the subsequent action by the authorities.

Patel is described by police as a content creator with a substantial online following, with approximately one million followers on Instagram. Her large social media presence has brought additional attention to the case, as the video was publicly shared through her social media accounts. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the creation and publication of the Reel as part of the case.
The incident comes amid continued scrutiny by authorities over social media posts that are alleged to be objectionable or offensive. Content shared on platforms such as Instagram can reach a large audience quickly, particularly when posted by creators with significant followings. In this case, police said the complaint specifically concerned the manner in which the currency note bearing Gandhi's image was handled in the video.
Further details about the specific allegations, the sections invoked in the case and the next legal proceedings were not provided in the information released by police. The arrest follows the complaint from the social worker and the police inquiry into the Reel posted on October 1. The case is now subject to the legal process, while the circumstances surrounding the social media post remain under investigation.
