A Class 8 student at a Palayamkottai matriculation school in Tirunelveli was injured Tuesday after a classmate attacked him with a sickle over a petty dispute involving a pencil, police said. The victim sustained minor cuts in two to three places, while a teacher who intervened also suffered a slight injury. Both are stable and receiving treatment at a private hospital.
The incident stemmed from a recent quarrel between the two boys over sharing a pencil, which left them estranged. On Tuesday, the attacker concealed a sickle in his school bag and assaulted his classmate during school hours. “The boy brought the weapon with intent,” a senior police official noted, adding that the minor will be referred to the Child Welfare Committee as per juvenile justice protocols.
Relatives of the victim voiced alarm over a young student carrying a deadly weapon to school with harmful motives, raising concerns about safety. This incident follows a 2024 Tirunelveli case where a Class 9 student attacked a peer with a sickle over spilled water, signaling a troubling trend of violence in schools.
