In a dramatic high-seas operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) intercepted 300 kg of narcotics, valued at Rs 1,800 crore, off the Gujarat coast near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) on the night of April 12-13. Acting on precise ATS intelligence, ICG ships spotted a suspicious boat, but smugglers dumped the contraband into the sea and fled across the IMBL upon sighting the patrol.
The ICG recovered the abandoned consignment, which was handed over to the ATS for further investigation. While the exact type of narcotic remains undisclosed, the haul’s massive value suggests high-potency drugs like methamphetamine or heroin, often trafficked through Gujarat’s coastal routes. No arrests were reported, as the perpetrators escaped, but probes are ongoing to trace the syndicate’s origins, likely linked to international cartels exploiting the Arabian Sea corridor.
This seizure follows a pattern of Gujarat’s rising role as a trafficking hub, with recent busts including 700 kg of methamphetamine off Porbandar in November 2024. The operation underscores the ICG and ATS’s vigilance in choking maritime drug routes, bolstering India’s fight against narco-terrorism amid growing regional challenges.
