Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Kewal Singh Dhillon on Friday said that the state has received more than ₹4.13 lakh crore from the Centre over the past 12 years under the Narendra Modi-led government, citing figures across tax devolution, grants, GST compensation and loans. Addressing a press conference, Dhillon said the financial assistance reflected what he described as “unprecedented” support from the Government of India to Punjab.
He added that the funding covered a wide range of sectors, including infrastructure development, welfare schemes and farmer-focused initiatives implemented during this period. According to the figures presented by Dhillon, Punjab received approximately ₹1.84 lakh crore through tax devolution, ₹1.48 lakh crore in grants-in-aid, ₹39,997 crore as GST compensation, and over ₹40,767 crore in loans and advances from the Centre.
He argued that the cumulative inflows demonstrated consistent financial backing from the central government. Dhillon further stated that Punjab’s share in central tax revenues had increased over successive Finance Commission cycles during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said this trend reflected what he called a sustained commitment to strengthening fiscal transfers to states.

He also rejected what he described as “misleading narratives” being circulated by opposition parties regarding Centre–state financial relations. According to him, the data clearly indicated that Punjab had benefited significantly from central schemes and fiscal allocations over the years. The BJP leader said the government’s focus had been on ensuring equitable development through large-scale investments in infrastructure, welfare delivery systems and rural support programmes, particularly those aimed at farmers and agricultural communities in Punjab.
The statement comes amid ongoing political debate over Centre–state fund distribution, with parties in Punjab frequently disputing claims related to fiscal support and development spending. Dhillon’s remarks are expected to add to the continuing political exchange over the state’s economic relationship with the Union government.
