Thailand is set to host the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group from October 12 to 18, bringing more than 15,000 delegates from 191 countries to Bangkok. The week-long gathering will bring together finance ministers, central bank governors, economic policymakers, business leaders and other international representatives to discuss global economic conditions and development priorities.
The meetings will take place at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, which will serve as the main venue for discussions and related activities. Key issues expected to feature in the broader economic discussions include global financial stability, public debt, economic uncertainty, climate challenges and inclusive growth. The annual meetings provide a platform for governments and financial institutions to exchange views on economic policies and international cooperation.
Thailand has stepped up preparations to manage the expected influx of international visitors, with particular attention to security, transport and accommodation. Authorities have strengthened arrangements around the convention centre and 21 designated hotels. Around 500 Tourist Police officers are expected to support security operations through patrols, undercover deployments, drone surveillance and motorcade escorts. Coordination with representatives from approximately 39 embassies is also part of the security plan.

The government has introduced measures to reduce traffic congestion during the event. Government offices in Bangkok are scheduled to operate remotely on October 12, 14 and 15, while October 13 is already a public holiday. October 16 has also been designated a special government and bank holiday in the capital. Private companies and state enterprises have been encouraged to consider suitable arrangements to ease pressure on transport networks and facilitate the movement of delegates.
The event is also expected to provide an economic opportunity for Thailand by bringing international policymakers, investors and business representatives to the country. Spending on hotels, transport, food and other services could benefit local businesses during the meetings. Thai authorities are seeking to use the international gathering to strengthen the country's profile as a regional business and financial centre while encouraging trade, investment and wider economic engagement.
The 2026 meetings mark a significant international gathering for Thailand, which last hosted the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in 1991. With thousands of participants expected over the week, the event will require coordination among government agencies, financial institutions and local authorities. Its broader significance will lie in the discussions on global economic challenges, as well as Thailand's efforts to demonstrate its capacity to host major international financial events.
