Nagpur Police arrested 35-year-old Samira Fatima, alias Samrala, alias Seema, on July 29 at a tea stall in Civil Lines, exposing a 15-year marriage scam targeting wealthy men. The Gittikhadan Police, led by Investigation Officer Sharda Bhopale, nabbed the school teacher after a year-long manhunt triggered by a complaint from businessman Ghulam Pathan in March 2023. Fatima allegedly married at least eight men, extorting over ₹50 lakh by leveraging emotional manipulation and false legal threats.
Fatima used matrimonial websites and social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to pose as a divorced mother, luring affluent, married Muslim men with fabricated sob stories. After marriage, she reportedly blackmailed victims with threats of false rape cases or public shaming, extracting sums like ₹50 lakh from one victim and ₹15 lakh from another, including a senior Reserve Bank officer. Pathan, who lost ₹10 lakh, exposed her after she filed a false rape case against him.
Police suspect Fatima operated within a larger extortion ring, possibly involving a maulana named Imran and others. Eight victims have come forward, and investigations continue to uncover additional accomplices and victims. Fatima, remanded to three-day custody, previously evaded arrest by claiming pregnancy and hiding in a Mominpura madarsa.
