The body of a 70-year-old woman, identified as Neera Mehta, the wife of a retired Army captain, was recovered from the rooftop of a house in Sector 21 of Panchkula, with police suspecting the involvement of the couple's domestic maid in the alleged murder. A case has been registered, and investigators are examining evidence to determine the exact circumstances that led to her death. According to police officials, Neera Mehta lived in Sector 21 with her husband, retired Army captain Manmohan Mehta. Their children are reportedly settled abroad, leaving the elderly couple living independently.
The incident came to light after Manmohan approached the police on Monday evening when his wife did not return home. Concerned about her absence, he informed authorities, following which police began searching for her. During the initial investigation, police traced Neera's movements before she went missing and recovered her body from the rooftop of a nearby house. Station House Officer of Sector 20 police station, Yashdeep Singh, said a murder case has been registered and further investigation is underway. Officials are currently collecting evidence and questioning people connected with the case to establish the sequence of events.
Police said the investigation has brought the couple's domestic maid, identified as Sunita, under suspicion. According to the complaint filed by Manmohan, Neera had suspected that the maid had stolen jewellery from their house after some valuables went missing. She had reportedly gone to question Sunita, who lived on the upper floor of a nearby residence, regarding the missing jewellery. The police are now investigating what happened after Neera went to meet the maid. Officials are looking into whether an argument or confrontation took place and whether the suspected theft allegation was connected to the woman's death.

However, authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the motive behind the alleged crime or revealed whether the suspect has been detained or arrested. Investigators are also examining forensic evidence collected from the location where Neera's body was found. The police are expected to analyse available clues, record statements of witnesses, and verify the timeline of events leading up to the discovery of the body. Further details are likely to emerge as the investigation progresses. The incident has caused concern among residents of Sector 21, particularly regarding the safety of elderly citizens living alone or without immediate family support.
Cases involving senior citizens often require careful investigation as authorities must examine personal relationships, domestic arrangements, and financial or property-related issues that may be connected to the crime. Police officials have not ruled out any possibility and are continuing their probe to establish the facts. The role of the maid, the circumstances surrounding the missing jewellery, and the events that occurred when Neera visited the nearby house are expected to be key aspects of the investigation.
The case highlights the importance of vigilance while employing domestic workers, especially for elderly residents who may depend on household assistance. Police officials have urged people not to draw conclusions until the investigation is complete and said action will be taken based on evidence collected during the probe. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the exact cause of Neera Mehta's death and identify those responsible. The recovery of her body has led to a detailed inquiry, with police teams gathering evidence and pursuing all available leads to solve the case.
