A 30-year-old man, Sunil, from Hasanpur Kala village, died allegedly due to delayed treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College in Meerut, leading to the immediate suspension of two junior resident doctors, Bhupesh Kumar Rai and Aniket, on Tuesday. The incident, following a road accident on Sunday night, has triggered widespread outrage after a viral video purportedly showed a doctor asleep during duty hours in the emergency ward.
Sunil was brought to LLRM’s emergency ward at 12:30 AM on Monday but succumbed by 8 AM, with family members alleging that doctors and staff were asleep and neglected his critical condition. Village head Jaggi Pradhan confirmed the family’s claims, stating, “No one attended to him despite repeated pleas.” The video, widely shared on X under hashtags like #MeerutHospitalNegligence, intensified public anger, with users like @UPHealthWatch demanding accountability.
LLRM Principal R C Gupta announced a three-member inquiry committee, comprising Dr. Anupam Verma, Assistant Professor Shashank Jindal, and Assistant Professor Kritesh Mishra, to probe the incident, with a report due within three days. Additionally, District Magistrate Deepak Meena formed a separate panel, including Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ashok Kataria, ADM City Brijesh Singh, and ACMO Dr. Praveen Gautam, to investigate further.

This incident follows a series of disciplinary actions in Uttar Pradesh’s health sector. In May 2025, a Kanpur Dehat newborn’s death led to a nurse’s dismissal and a doctor’s suspension. In June, five Raebareli doctors faced dismissal for neglect, and in July, a Farrukhabad nurse was suspended for extortion, with multiple doctors disciplined statewide for corruption and malpractice. The Meerut case, reflecting systemic issues, has fueled calls on X for stricter oversight, with @IndiaHealthNow citing 1,200 annual deaths from medical negligence in UP hospitals.
