Manipur Police arrested a 43-year-old man and seized over 184 kg of ganja in Imphal West district on Wednesday. The operation, triggered by a tip-off, led to the interception of a truck at the New Keithelmanbi police picket point, where authorities discovered 184.13 kg of the contraband hidden in the vehicle, according to a police statement.
The driver, identified as Khomdram Deben, was apprehended on the spot for transporting the illegal substance. Police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further legal action is underway. Authorities are investigating the source of the ganja and its intended destination, suspecting links to a larger smuggling network operating in the region.
This seizure adds to a series of recent drug busts in Manipur, where police have intensified efforts to curb the illegal drug trade. In May 2025, over 274 kg of ganja was seized in the same district, leading to multiple arrests. The state’s proximity to Myanmar, a major hub for narcotics production, has made it a hotspot for trafficking, prompting heightened vigilance.

Local residents expressed relief at the police action but voiced concerns about the growing drug menace. “Such operations are crucial, but we need more to stop this completely,” said Thounaojam Ratan, a shopkeeper near Keithelmanbi. Superintendent of Police, Imphal West, confirmed that investigations are ongoing to dismantle the supply chain and prevent further smuggling attempts.
