Astronaut Anil Menon has shared an insight into how astronauts conduct medical and scientific work aboard the International Space Station (ISS), highlighting the teamwork involved in an ultrasound demonstration. Menon explained that such procedures require astronauts to coordinate closely, with one person operating the ultrasound equipment while another manages the controls during the examination.
Menon said a remote guider and a team of doctors on Earth help astronauts capture the appropriate images during the procedure. The medical team can also analyse the images in real time, allowing them to determine whether additional observations or follow-up examinations may be required. The process demonstrates how astronauts can carry out complex medical activities in space with support from specialists on the ground.
“This is how we do science on the International Space Station,” Menon said while describing the demonstration. He also noted that scientists and physicians are studying how microgravity affects the human body, including concerns that changes in the normal movement of blood could increase the risk of blood clots among astronauts.

Medical monitoring is an important part of long-duration space missions because astronauts experience conditions that are very different from those on Earth.
