Twelve Maoist cadres surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Thursday, laying down arms as part of the state government’s flagship ‘Poona Margem: Rehabilitation to Rejuvenation’ program. The group, comprising eight women and four men, voluntarily handed over three automatic weapons, including AK-47s and SLR rifles, along with ammunition, explosives, and other materials.
Among the surrendered cadres was Somdu Madkam, a senior divisional committee member, along with several party and battalion members, who collectively carried cash rewards totaling Rs 54 lakh. The group also surrendered 250 gelatin sticks, 400 detonators, gunpowder, and cordex wire, highlighting the significant operational capabilities being neutralized.
The surrender was witnessed by high-ranking officials, including Inspector General of Police Sundarraj P, Deputy Inspector General of Police CRPF, and Bijapur Superintendent of Police Dr Jitendra Kumar Yadav. Authorities emphasized that legal processes are underway to facilitate their rehabilitation, including financial support, skill development programs, and social reintegration.

Officials noted that the trend is part of a broader success in Bijapur, where, since January 2024, 888 Maoists have voluntarily returned to mainstream society, 1,163 were arrested, and 231 neutralized in encounters. Authorities credit the combination of security pressure, outreach programs, and accessible rehabilitation schemes for encouraging surrenders.
The state government’s strategy blends strict law enforcement with development and dialogue, gradually eroding armed influence in the Bastar region. Programs like ‘Poona Margem’ have been particularly effective in converting fear into trust, allowing former militants to envision opportunities in civilian life.
The surrender reflects a collective effort involving the police, central forces, local administration, and citizens, underscoring Chhattisgarh’s commitment to lasting peace and development. Officials describe the event as a milestone in the ongoing campaign to restore security, encourage dialogue, and promote socio-economic progress across Maoist-affected areas.
