The Indian Navy commissioned INS Nipun, a deep-sea diving vessel equipped to support rapid submarine rescue operations, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The vessel was formally inducted into service in the presence of Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan. Its commissioning strengthens the Navy’s specialised capabilities for underwater operations and emergency assistance to submarines.

INS Nipun is the second Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the Nistar-class to join the Indian Navy. Such vessels are designed to support complex diving operations in deep waters and provide specialised assistance during underwater emergencies. Their capabilities are particularly important for submarine rescue missions, where speed and specialised equipment can be critical to saving personnel.

The vessel will contribute to the Navy’s ability to conduct deep-sea diving and underwater support operations. Its role extends beyond emergency submarine rescue and includes activities requiring specialised diving capabilities and equipment. The induction of another DSV is expected to strengthen the Navy’s operational readiness for missions involving underwater assets and challenging maritime environments.
