An eviction notice issued to the historic Delhi Gymkhana Club in Lutyens’ Delhi has triggered criticism from former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, who described the development as “truly tragic” and called for the preservation of the institution’s sporting and historical legacy. The Centre has directed the club to vacate its premises by June 5 as part of a takeover process initiated by the Land and Development Office (L&DO) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
According to the official order, the L&DO will take possession of the 27.3-acre land parcel located at 2, Safdarjung Road in New Delhi. Reacting to the notice in a post on X, Bedi expressed disappointment over the move and appealed for reconsideration. She highlighted the club’s long-standing contribution to sports and public life, noting that former Union minister Arun Jaitley had overseen the construction of a new swimming pool during his tenure associated with the institution.
Bedi stated that some of the finest tennis matches in the country had been played at the club and emphasized that the venue represented far more than a prime real estate property. “So much history, so many memories, and generations of sporting excellence are associated with this place,” she wrote, adding that while change may be necessary, institutions with historical value deserve thoughtful preservation. She also suggested that any future development could coexist with the preservation of the club’s legacy.

Originally founded on July 3, 1913, as the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club, the institution was established during the British colonial era to serve administrators and military officers. Over the decades, it evolved into one of the capital’s most prominent social and sporting clubs, hosting several high-profile events and members from across public life. The eviction notice has now sparked wider debate about heritage conservation, land use, and the future of historically significant institutions in the national capital.
