A 21-year-old man was detained by Army personnel in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur after allegedly impersonating a senior military officer and presenting himself as a Brigadier for several weeks. The accused, identified as Aryan Verma, was taken into custody on Friday following a sting operation conducted at the Shaheed Museum in the Shahjahanpur Cantonment area.
According to officials, Verma had been under the Army's watch for nearly two months after reports emerged that he was frequently seen wearing the ceremonial uniform of a Brigadier and introducing himself as a high-ranking officer. The alleged impersonation raised concerns within military circles, prompting authorities to closely monitor his activities before taking action.
Investigators said Verma had created an elaborate façade to support his claims. As part of the scheme, he reportedly hired two bouncers and introduced them to the public as National Security Guard (NSG) commandos assigned to his protection. By travelling with the pair and maintaining a visible security presence, he allegedly sought to reinforce the impression that he held an important position within the armed forces.

During the operation, authorities recovered several items allegedly used in the impersonation. Among them was a forged identity card purportedly carrying the seal of the dean of the Armed Forces Medical College. Officials also seized an Army regimental cane and a dummy pistol that investigators believe were used to strengthen the appearance of authenticity.
The case has drawn attention because of the level of detail involved in the alleged deception. Authorities are examining how the forged documents were created, whether others assisted in the operation and if the accused used his fabricated military status to gain financial, social or other advantages.
Military and police officials have launched a further investigation into the matter. The incident has also renewed concerns about the misuse of military uniforms, insignia and forged credentials, with authorities stressing that strict action will be taken against individuals found impersonating members of the armed forces.
