An Egyptian social media blogger has surrendered to police after allegedly deceiving followers into donating millions of Egyptian pounds by falsely claiming she was suffering from cancer, according to authorities and local media reports. The case has sparked widespread public debate in Egypt over online fraud and the misuse of emotional appeals for financial gain.
The accused, identified as Donia Fouad from the coastal city of Ismailia, is alleged to have raised around four million Egyptian pounds through repeated fundraising posts on social media platforms. In these appeals, she claimed she was undergoing expensive cancer treatment and urgently needed financial assistance. Authorities say medical examinations later confirmed that she did not suffer from cancer at any point during the campaign.
Investigators also detained Fouad’s husband earlier for questioning as part of the probe into the fundraising activities. Shortly after his detention, Fouad voluntarily surrendered to police. Officials have stated that the case is being treated as online fraud, and further legal proceedings are expected as complaints from donors continue to be filed.

In a widely circulated post on her official Facebook account, Fouad admitted that she had fabricated the illness entirely. She wrote that she “needed attention” and described her actions as wrong, adding that she now understands she “deserves what is happening” to her. In the same post, she claimed she was suffering from mental health issues and requested help and treatment, saying she had found emotional comfort in the sympathy and attention she received from followers.
Fouad further stated that the concern shown by her husband and supporters during her claims of illness had provided her with psychological relief. She also admitted that she had previously ignored advice from people around her to seek professional mental health support. Her statements have added another layer of complexity to the case, as authorities assess both criminal responsibility and possible psychological factors.
The case has triggered strong reactions across Egypt, with several donors initiating legal action to recover their money on grounds of fraud. It has also reignited discussion about the regulation of online fundraising and the influence of social media personalities, particularly in cases where emotional narratives are used to solicit public donations. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they examine the full scope of the fundraising activities.
